{ Bentonite Clay | Benefits + Uses }

Posted on August 30 2016

Last week, we posted about Natural Detox Bath Recipes!  I tried it out this past week after learning about how toxins can build up in your body over time how detoxifying in a bath would help alleviate uncomfortable symptoms that can come along with toxin overload in the body.

One of the main ingredients in the detox bath recipe that I tried was bentonite clay! Lately, I have been hearing about the benefits of this ancient substance and I am intrigued!

Healing clay has been around and used for thousands of years. The first record use of medicinal clay was around 2500 B.C in Mesopotamia...So basically, ANCIENT!

WHAT is Bentonite Clay & HOW does it work?

This clay is derived from deposits of weathered volcanic ash. It is extremely effective in the natural detoxifying of the intestines! It has been recognized as such around the world. So.. how does it work?  The clay begins by absorbing toxins, attracting them to its extensive surface area where they stick like flies to sticky paper; then it absorbs the toxins, taking them in the way a sponge mops up a mess on the kitchen table! Bentonite clay has a negative electrical charge, attracting positively charged molecules. Most toxins are positively charged, so clay naturally rids the body of toxins as it pulls and holds toxins in.

Below are examples of how to use clay internally & externally:

1. For Glowing Skin

Clay makes an amazing facial mask. It helps to shrink pores, tighten & tone skin, remove impurities, sloughing off dead skin cells, and helping make your skin look and feel great.  It can be used directly on pimples to reduce size and inflammation and speed up the process of getting rid of them quicker.

Face Mask- form a paste of bentonite and water and apply directly to face as a mask.  Leave it on for approx. 20 Minutes and wash off with cool water.

2. For Oral Health

Due to the ability of the clay to bind to heavy metals and toxins as well as providing minerals, it can be used as a tooth powder.

Teeth whitening- use bentonite mixed with water as a mouth rinse that is both alkalizing and toxin removing.  Mix 1/2 teaspoon of clay in 1/4 cup water in a small jar with a plastic lid and shake well. Rinse for 2 minutes and repeat until empty.

3. For Morning Sickness

To keep morning sickness at bay during early pregnancy, take 1/2 tsp of clay in water.  *Be sure to consult your doctor or medical professional before using during pregnancy

4. Heal Burns and Cuts

Mix clay and water to get a paste like consistency, and apply to the burn or cut. Wrap in plastic wrap or wet gauze after applying to ensure the paste doesn't dry. Change bandages and paste every few hours as needed.

5. Add to favorite recipes for a natural cleanse

Fatigue, Headaches, sinus infection, allergic reactions, and many other ailments are a result of toxin buildup in the body. To cleanse your internal organs, add a couple teaspoons of clay powder to a smoothie or your favorite food. Stay on top of hydration or take with fiber to help it pass through digestive system quickly!

We could keep going, but you get the point. We love this amazing bentonite!  Have you heard of or used this clay before? What are some of your favorite ways to use this clay? We would love to hear from you!
