{ Essential Oils | Bug Off Spray }

Posted on June 15 2016

With beautiful warm weather comes the not so fun side effects-insects.  It's officially that time of year to be spending more time outside than inside, and none of us want to deal with the pesky insects while trying to enjoy a summer picnic!  Mosquitoes, flies, and other creepy crawly insects love to love me, I am not sure I have ever lasted one day outside in the summer without getting bit.  I am SO excited to share with you my new favorite DIY insect repellent!  Growing up, we always had a collection of various bug sprays! While they did the job, I really don't want the harsh chemicals on my skin!

 After some research I found loads of ways to make Homemade "get outta here bug" recipe. They all pretty much contain the same base ingredient- water or witch hazel- as well as a combination of essential oils.  So threw it together, and it was so easy!

I wanted to test it out for a week or so to be sure it worked, and i am happy to report IT DID!  No bug bites after numerous nights out walking with my hubby!   Made with no harmful chemicals and spending less money in the long run!  You can also choose your own combination of your favorite essential oils too!

Many of you know that Citronella oil keeps mosquitos away, but here i have listed some other oils they for sure don't like:

  • Cinnamon
  • Rosemary
  • Clove
  • Bergamot
  • Geranium
  • Lavender
  • Cedarwood
  • Peppermint
  • Basil
  • Thyme
  • Lemongrass

Supplies needed:

  • 4oz Glass Bottle { essential oils should ALWAYS be used in glass containers, never plastic. The darker the glass, the better for preserving the oils potency }
  • Witch Hazel { i ordered mine on Amazon }
  • Distilled Water
  • Essential Oils of your choice { used about 50 drops of therapeutic grade essential oils- its very important to use 100% pure grade oils }

To blend, add all of the following to the glass bottle using a funnel for the water & witch hazel & a dropper for placing the oils in the bottle:

  • 2oz. distilled water
  • 1.5oz. witch hazel
  • 50 drop essential oils--in my recipe I use 35 drops Thieves, 20 drops of Lavender, and 5 drops of Peppermint.

That's all!   Be sure that you shake it well before each use. So happy about how well this combination has worked for me!  It is such a good alternative, and glad that I am not spraying chemicals all over my arms and legs anymore!

This might be a good recipe for you to try if mosquitos are attracted to you to!
