{ Great Lakes Gelatin }

Gelatin, also known as cooked collagen, is an amazing superfood with anti-inflammatory and anti-aging qualities. It helps to fill the missing amino acids in our diet, According to Ray Peat, PhD,  " The degenerative and inflammatory diseases can often be corrected by the use of gelatin rich-foods." 

  

What is Gelatin? 

Gelatin is a translucent, colorless, brittle, and flavorless solid substance. It comes from animal bones, skin, and tissue. The animal parts are boiled to extract the collagen. So basically, it is a dehydrated broth powder.  This protein-rich collagen is gelatin.  It is commonly used as a gelling agent in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.  Gelatin used to be a big part of a healthy diet, but today many people have no idea about what to do with it.  Many associate gelatin with Jello { which is filled with sugar, artificial colors and flavors, and GMO foods } but this isn't the type of gelatin we are talking about here. 

Health Benefits of Gelatin: 

Strong Bones- Bones are living structures are either built up or broken down by the nutritional choices we make. Gelatin helps build a healthy bone matrix, by providing easy to digest magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, sulphur, silicon, and other trace minerals.

Hormone Balance- The amino acid, glycine is provided by Gelatin, and works to regulate insulin and preventing hypoglycemia.  Glycine is also beneficial in helping the body make glutathione, which is very important in helping the body remove excess estrogen.  Excess estrogen comes from many many places, such as environmental pollution, toxic body care products, diets that are high in processed foods, and some types birth control. Estrogen dominance has been researched in great detail as a risk factor for female cancers.  

Allergies- Gelatin helps to seal inflamed and porous linings of the intestinal tract, while helping to manage allergic reactions and sensitivities.  Many doctors believe that a permeable intestinal lining is a root issue in allergies, because it is an immune barrier that is in charge of keeping pathogens out.  

Teeth, Hair + Nails- Gelatin is a superfood that provides optimal magnesium, calcium, phosphorus support which help builds strong teeth, hair and nails. Many of the minerals that gelatin provides are severely lacking in our diet.  

Cellulite- Cellulite is essentially caused by a breakdown of collagen, which is made worse by nutritional deficiencies in our diet.  Our bodies weren't designed to break down processed food in a healthy way, which leads to the breaking down of collagen in our bodies. 

Stretch Marks- Gelatin helps to improve the firmness + elasticity of the skin. Gelatin boosts collagen production, which is a huge preventive measure in avoiding stretch marks!

Abundance of Protein-  It has 6 grams of protein per tablespoon. Replace protein powder with gelatin in smoothies! 

Digestive Health- Gelatin promotes stomach acid production.  Since it is a binding agent, the acid moves from the stomach lining to the food in the body that needs to be digested.  The end result of this means less constipation, gas, and bloating.

Not all Gelatin is created equal: 

The only brand of gelatin I will purchase is Great Lakes.  It is derived from grass fed, hormone-free, pasture raised animals. Be careful of other brands, where they use animals from factory farms, that are raised on GMO grains, hormones, and antibiotics.  

 

It is very beneficial to incorporate 2-3 tablespoons of gelatin per day.
